Rio Fronteras originated as a tribute to the Arizona/Sonora region - where the culture, style, and community of two nations converge. This region is unique in its endurance, creativity, and tradition - carrying a history and heritage that spans the continued resilience of Indigenous nations, a succession of European traditions, and a unique North American culture that has fused both in a testament to the grit and innovation required to flourish in the Sonoran Desert.
The lessons and spirit of the borderlands have since been carried beyond its own geography, and can be applied around the world to better understand all that defines "the fringe".
In a world that is constantly in flux, the authenticity and spirit of a border region provides insight for understanding each other, and bridging gaps of polarity.

The borderlands of Southern Arizona are a place of resilience, culture, and community. A place where people come together to support one another in the face of challenges. From community building to environmental conservation, organizations across the region are innovating to make a real impact.
What may appear to the untrained eye to be a vast, inhospitable desert, has proven itself to be an oasis of growth. From Phoenix and Tucson to Hermosillo and Puerto Peñasco, institutions and communities excel in what defines North America as a continent: grit and ingenuity.

The Arizona-Sonora region thrives in the rich identity of its people - truly binational, bilingual, and bicultural. Yet, in the face of a complex and ever-shifting border dynamic, there has been a lack of unity and cohesion. Rio Fronteras was born from the need for a central hub that celebrates and connects the parable of this region with the world through powerful storytelling. Based in Tucson, Arizona, we capture the essence of the fringe through photography, focusing on the U.S.-Mexico border, Latin America, and regions in flux around the world.
